Before you read
Before You Read
When and where to read: Be prepared to take advantage of the moment.
- Have books in your car
- Carry books in your purse or bag for times such as the doctor’s office or in a restaurant
- Have books everywhere in the house
- Routine and frequency are essential. Schedule a regular reading time such as before going to bed (ie. Bedtime means story time).
What to read:
Consider the age and interests of your child and time of day. There are stories filled with activity and calming, soothing stories, which are great as bedtime stories.
Why are you reading? Is your purpose to:
- read the illustrations and the art
- share – enjoy just being together
- emphasize a certain message
- review familiar words
- introduce new words
- enjoy a familiar story
- become acquainted with a new story
These lists tell you reading aloud is not just a hit-and-miss proposition. It is filled with exciting possibilities that become realities when you make it a priority. Read at least three stories every single day. This can be:
- the same story three times (if that is your child’s request)
- three familiar stories
- a mixture of old and new
