The Commission serves as a “Board-Appointed Advisory Committee” and its purpose is to promote matters pertaining to the status of women and girls in Leon County. One of the primary goals for the Commission is to promote awareness on issues that affect women. The Commission is charged by the Board of County Commissioners with the responsibility of giving input to the Board, as needed, on approaches in which to address issues on women and girls in Leon County.

As an important part of their effort the Commission is holding its first public hearings to hear from the public about the obstacles and challenges faced by women and girls in Leon County.

Household Hazardous Waste

4 Feb

The Leon County Solid Waste Management Division announces the next monthly Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection, which will take place on Saturday, February 4th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Works Operations Center, 2280 Miccosukee Rd. This event is one of many monthly activities in Leon County’s regular collection season, which will continue on the first Saturday of every month through May 2012.

Citizens may bring up to 50 lbs. of hazardous waste, in addition to their electronics. Propane tanks must weigh less than 40 lbs., and there is a limit of one tire per participant. Medical sharps, medicines and radioactive waste cannot be accepted.
Additionally, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s ‘Easy As One’ team will join the Leon County Solid Waste Management Division on Saturday at the Leon County Public Works Operations Center. The ‘Easy As One’ program and website highlight easy actions each one of us can take to make sustainable practices part of our daily lives at home, at school, at work and at play. This website provides a 24/7 source for information about green practices so that citizens can make informed decisions about the simple choices made every day that impact the environment.

‘Easy As One’ will collect used cell phones (working and non-working) along with stray chargers. Phones will be donated to a 911 cell phone bank where data will be cleared, phones refurbished and provided to victim-assistance programs. Phones that can not be refurbished will be responsibly recycled. Participants in Saturday’s collections will receive a Florida State Park day pass, while supplies last.

For more information on monthly Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics collections, call the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center at (850) 606-1803 or visit www.leoncountyfl.gov/HHW/collection/ for the complete collection schedule.

The Tallahassee Childhood Obesity Prevention Education (COPE) Coalition, funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation (BCBSF Foundation), will launch a grants program to address childhood obesity on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Neighborhood Health Service Center, 438 West Brevard Street in Tallahassee.

As a part of the announcement, the COPE Coalition will release its “Call to Action” Plan to alleviate childhood obesity in Tallahassee and more broadly Leon County. The Call to Action Plan highlights the current needs and gaps and provides key recommendations for a community-wide effort to combat childhood obesity.

The COPE Coalition is expected to fund 20-25 grants, totaling $200,000. Potential grantees can submit proposals for up to two years of funding. Funds for this initiative were made possible through a grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield Florida Foundation as part of Embrace A Healthy Florida Initiative, an ongoing effort to help communities access programs and services to adopt healthy lifestyles and reverse childhood obesity.
